    This is a wonderful, historic, vintage (circa 1940s) decorative collector's  plate from Vernon Kilns California Pottery featuring the renowned Dr. A. S. McCleary of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
    About Vernon Kilns.
    Vernon Kilns made collectors plates for hundreds of cities and  states in the United States, some organizations and institutions, and  some for foreign cities and countries. Vernon Kilns closed its doors  permanently in the early 1950s.
    According to Bill Stern (2001), Vernon Kilns was one of the well known "Big Five" of the Southern California Pottery group (p. 42,

    Doctor A. S. McCleary -- Founder of the McCleary Clinic and Hospital, the largest institution of its kind in the world.  Also the creator of "Wapoo."  His hobby was sculpturing.
    Our Flag -- The original of this picture hangs in the Hospital lobby.  It was painted by Mr. Fred Tripp, a former patient of the Hospital,
    Crescent Lake Manor -- Home of Dr. McCleary, which is maintained as a shrine to him.
    Wapoo -- legendary Indian character and discoverer of the Springs.
